74105 Humanities: World Views

About the course

This course is taught over 17 weeks.

This course continues the introduction to the Humanities begun in 74104. If studied with 74104 and 74106, it can be credited towards a BA major in Humanities. (These three courses are an alternative to the old 74103.)

Humanities: World Views adds Religious Studies and the History of Sciences to the Humanities disciplines intorduced in 74104. It encourages students to think critically about the way that humans construct understandings of the world by means of myth, science, religion, and convention.

What's in the course

  • Religion and Science in Context: Definition and effects of religion and its cultural contexts. Case studies include a Hindu festival and the Maori Ringatu movement. Definition of "science" and study of 19th Century scientists Alfred Wallace and Charles Darwin, and their conceptions of science within different religious contexts
  • Myths and Conventions: Considers ideas about conventions and traditions, and myths and gender. Exemplar studies include New Zealand myths, and texts by Shaw, Euripides, Strauss and Jean Rhys.

What students learn

Students will be able to

  • Define key features of, and compare and contrast the relationship between, science and religion.
  • Analyse the meaning, significance and dramatic representation of myth within contrasting social contexts
  • Contrast the exploration and representation of social issues within music and/or literary texts.
