About the course

This course will enable students to understand the principles of classification and subject access in libraries and to apply that understanding to the successful analysis and solution of client information needs. Students will develop appropriate skills to enable them to identify, access, and use appropriate sources of information. This course is available in the following programme(s):

What's in the course

  • Information sources: print sources; non print sources, including electronic; New Zealand and Maori information sources; and the Internet.
  • Subject approach to information: library classification schemes and their struture, use, strengths and weaknesses; controlled vocabularies and their application in given situations

What students learn

Students will be able to
  • Analyse the structure of knowledge as it is portrayed in classification schemes used in libraries
  • Examine the structure of a controlled vocabulary and explain the significance of such vocabularies in information retrieval
  • Evaluate a variety of print and electronic reference sources.
  • Identify and apply the processes involved in fulfilling the information needs of clients
