About the course

This course enables students to understand the basic principles and procedures used to develop, implement, operate and test systems in the information technology environment. Access to Microsoft Office Professional or later with Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint applications as well as the Internet is necessary. Students will be able to use current information technology, for example computers, the Internet, telecommunications and multimedia, effectively in simple structured situations.

The course will give students an awareness of the tremendous changes that information technology continues to bring to our lives, and how we can best prepare ourselves to understand and use them. A reasonable knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and database software packages on a personal computer is required.

  • Use integrated office software to create a presentation from a scenario with components in both hardcopy and electronic format.
  • Access the Internet and its related facilities for research and sharing of information.
  • Discuss key features of business information systems.
  • Explain the hardware and software components of a computer system and their interrelationship.
  • Discuss the key features of a telecommunications system.
  • Summarise the role of information systems at the operational, management, and strategic level of the business environment.
  • discuss the social aspects of the development and use of information technology.
  • outline the phases of a systems development life cycle and relate the life cycle to the business environment.

Prerequisites

Applicants will be required to demonstrate that they have word processing, spreadsheet database, presentation and Internet browser skills by completing the prerequisite test.
