71110 Introduction to Law

About the course

This course is designed to develop an understanding of the components and legal implications of the New Zealand constitution, including the Treaty of Waitangi and law-making processes. This understanding will enable the student to demonstrate the approach lawyers use by applying the principles of statutory interpretation to legislation, in relation to a given set of facts, and so resolve the legal aspects of business problems.   • An understanding of the New Zealand legal system.
  • An understanding and ability to apply the basic principles of tort law including the tort of negligence.
  • An understanding and ability to apply the basic principles of the law of contract.
  • An understanding of the basic principles of consumer and other trading laws and the ability to apply those principles to given scenarios.
  • An awareness of an aspect of a legal topic affecting business in a given situation.
