Current function:

I am the Dean for the School of Information and Social Sciences. I am responsible for academic staff and programmes in three teaching centres – Education Studies, Information Sciences, and Social Sciences – and an administration team. I am also responsible for the Open Polytechnic’s Auckland Learning Centre.

I am committed to excellence in teaching, research and scholarship – the success of every student is our focus and highest priority.

Programmes offered by the School span a range of disciplines, including Communication, Education, E-Learning, Humanities, Information and Library Studies, Information Systems and Technology, Maths and Statistics, Psychology, Research Methods, Social Sciences, and Tertiary Study Skills.

I currently chair the Open Polytechnic’s Research Committee, and have led the development of a research strategy that will set the direction for research at the Open Polytechnic for the period 2010-2013.

Past experience:

Before coming to Open Polytechnic I studied and tutored at Victoria University of Wellington, where I completed a PhD in 1998. I have also guest lectured at the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji.

I have ten years experience in distance education, as a senior lecturer, degree convenor, and more recently in academic leadership and management positions.

I have a broad interdisciplinary background in the social sciences. My teaching and research interests are in globalisation and culture, with particular reference to migration and identity in the Pacific and Asia, areas that I have drawn from in the development of courses in Communication and Social Sciences.

Current teaching and research interests:

Teaching interests include cultural identity, intercultural communication, globalisation, place identity, migration, and Pacific Studies. I have extensive research experience, having worked in Fiji and among Pasifika communities in New Zealand.

I am the Course Leader for COMM1/1040 Communication Skills and a 560 Business Communication lecturer, a core paper in the NZQA qualification "New Zealand Diploma in Business" (NZDipBus).

Past experience:

I have been teaching at Open Polytechnic since 1986. Prior to joining the Polytechnic I had wide production experience in the printing industry, working in newspaper, book and magazine publishing and commercial printing. I particularly enjoy being a communication tutor, simply because communication is such an interesting subject and a vital part of our employment and everyday life.

I'm Course Leader for the popular course "560 Business Communication". This is a core paper in the NZQA qualification "New Zealand Diploma in Business" (NZDipBus). I help hundreds of eager students every year.

My students thrive as they engage in an exciting learning environment. They meet and work with each other on online forums. As one student recently told us "I really enjoyed the course - it's a great paper to 'apply as you learn'".

I am a Lecturer in Communication. I look after a number of courses in the areas of writing and public relations.

Past experience:

I completed my Masters and PhD degrees in English Literature at Victoria University. I am fascinated by language and I enjoy analysing what makes writing ‘good’.

While studying for my degrees I also worked as a manager in a small business. This provided me with invaluable experience in terms of the issues involved in reputation management and employee relations. I also gained a real appreciation for those students who balance work and study!

Current function:

I am a Senior Lecturer in Information Systems and Technology and a Researcher in elearning, mobile learning, Second Life and other Web2 technologies. I enjoy helping students become independent learners within interdependent teams. I look after the IT diplomas and certificates.

Past experience:

I completed my various degrees at Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield in the UK. I've been teaching since 1981 in the UK and NZ and by distance and online in New Zealand since 1999. My research in the educational technologies has been presented at conferences and seminars in the UK, US, Canada, Mexico, Thailand, Fiji, Australia and New Zealand. I enjoy guiding my students online and am passionately committed to their success. I have taught other teachers to teach online at the Open Polytechnic and other institutions and advised three international Universities about elearning technologies and pedagogy.

Zlatko Kovacic

Current function:

I mark and assess student work and provide feedback to students. I develop and update course materials and provide advice to students. I'm also involved in research, professional and administrative activities at Open Polytechnic.

Past experience:

Before arriving in New Zealand in 1995, I was a lecturer in the School of Economics at Belgrade University, Yugoslavia for over fifteen years. I have a PhD in statistics. I have taught a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate statistical courses, as well as computer programming and econometrics. I have worked with a variety of computers (from mainframes to microcomputers) in various roles (programming, installing, using, staff training etc.).

I have a varied research interests, ranging from learning and teaching IT, to eCommerce, eLearning, and time series and multivariate analysis. My current research is focused on social and cultural aspects of eGovernment and on cognitive processes in distance education using computers and communications technologies.

I'm an Associate Editor of two academically peer refereed journals: Journal of Information Technology Education and Informing Science: The International Journal of an Emerging Transdiscipline.

My hobbies include tennis and jogging. I also find time to listen to 1960/70's music and classical music, reading and going to the cinema.

I organise and teach maths courses at levels 1 to 5, and help to teach in statistics courses.

Past experience:

I have been involved in distance education as a student and a tutor over many years, in engineering subjects and more recently in maths and statistics, so I have a clear understanding of the kinds of study problems that students face and I also know what it feels like to succeed at distance learning.

My study and earlier work experience have given me a clear understanding of the subjects that I teach and the learning needs of students.

I did an NZCE, mostly by correspondence, in the early 1970's, then a Bachelor of Education extramurally through Massey university in the 1980's then a Diploma in Applied Statistics in the 1990's, also through Massey.

I am a Senior Lecturer and Discipline Leader in Information Systems and Technology at the School of Information & Social Sciences. My responsibilities include looking after the IST degree and diploma programmes.

Past experience:

I completed my PhD in Physics and Mathematics at Rostov State University in Russia where I lectured in "Methodology of Teaching Physics and Computer Science" as well as in General Physics.

Before I started my work at Open Polytechnic, I worked at Wordsworth (IS) Ltd in Wellington as a software developer and programmer of business software. I have also worked as a Research Scientist in the Materials Physics team at Industrial Research Limited (Lower Hutt, New Zealand).

My current research interest is in the methodology of teaching.

My outside interests are photography, yoga, reading books on philosophy and listening to classical music.

Past experience:

I have worked in public and academic libraries in New Zealand, Australia and Canada. My experience as a librarian includes reference, children's, acquisitions, collection development, and management, and I continue to be interested in all these areas. I am particularly interested in the future of libraries and in new ideas of the nature of information and knowledge. I have over 20 years library expericence in public, academic and special libraries around New Zealand. My particular areas of interest include bibliographic services, collection management and the organisation and use of information. I am an active researcher within the information and library fields. I am a Principal Lecturer in Information and Library Studies and Programme leader for OP5101 Certificate in Cataloguing. I teach cataloguing and classification, and information sources and service. I am also the Bachelor of Applied Science Degree Convenor, a strategic role with oversight for the development of the degree.

Past experience:

My professional and research interests focus around cataloguing and classification, current awareness services (SDI), Library 2.0, and continuing professional development. I am fascinated by information architecture as well – I like organising information and structuring it so it can be accessed and retrieved. I have a passion for teaching and mentoring students, and relish the challenge of writing and delivering courses by distance to adult learners.

I have a Master of Library and Information Studes, and a BA (Hons) in English literature. I’ve worked in libraries since 1987 (including more than 10 years in the Parliamentary Library), lectured part time since 2000, and worked as a consultant in records management (part time) since 2002. I am heavily involved with the cataloguing community, and research and publish regularly. My current research is around graduate outcomes: the differences that having a qualification make to the ILS graduates.

I am a Senior Lecturer in Psychology. My responsibilities include being programme leader for the Diploma in Health and Human behaviour and Course Leader for 73328 Treatment Issues and 73132 Psychology of Stress.

Past experience:

I am a Registered Psychologist with 20 years experience working as a Clinical Psychologist in a variety of mental health settings in NZ. My teaching interests are in the Clinical and Mental Health areas, with a particular emphasis on the practical application of psychological principles. I have research interests in the mental health workforce development areas and particularly in the training of Cognitive Behaviour Therapists.

I'm a Senior Lecturer in Psychology. My main responsibilities are to assist students, to teach diploma and degree courses, maintain quality of courses, take workshops and conduct research for publication.

Past experience:

After working as a postie, I started studying psychology at Victoria University because I became fascinated by the human potential for healing. Later I won a scholarship to do a PhD. I investigated ‘self-actualization’, and afterwards, studied inner peace and inner wholeness. In August, 1994, I started work at the Open Polytechnic. I enjoy teaching very much: I learn a lot, and it’s rewarding to see students have insights and realize their career goals. I enjoy research too because it’s a challenge to be original, order my thoughts, and get published (see two of my most recent articles below).

I am a Principal Lecturer in Communication and I teach 72182 Writing for the Web, 72261 Public Sector Communication and 5097 Instructional Design for e-learning. I am also the programme leader for OP5440 The Certificate in Designing and Facilitating E-Learning.

Past experience:

I have an honours degree in English from Victoria University and over six years experience as a technical and web writer publishing to corporate intranets. I have been teaching at the Open Polytechnic for three and a half years and have a particular interest in researching and teaching purely online courses. In my time I have also been a journalist and a Montessori Primary teacher and I am mother to three girls. I enjoy working with and inspiring students, which in turn inspires me to keep learning. I also enjoy trying out new ways of doing things. Staying abreast of developments in the field is a full-time occupation.

I have a Masters Degree in Communication from Victoria University and my research interests include gender and communication as well as communication apprehension. I have written a book chapter of a communication textbook. Academic credentials:

I hold a Doctorate in Literature and Philosophy; an MA in Communications Science, a BA Honours in Communication Science and a BA with Psychology and Sociology majors. I am an accredited Myers Briggs psychological profiling administrator and hold a certificate in Assessment of Learning in Higher Education (Level 7).

Past experience:

I have taught at universities in South Africa, the USA, Australia, Namibia and Kenya. Before coming to the Open Polytechnic I was previously Professor and Head of the Department of Communication Sciences and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Zululand in South Africa.

I have authored eight books, numerous articles in scientific and popular journals, and produced many broadcast television and radio inserts and corporate videos. I have worked as a journalist in print and radio and as a television producer. I have run my own communications and public relations consultancy for 25 years and was previously a partner in two information technology services and training companies.

I have provided strategic counselling, strategic research and communication development services to a portfolio of international corporate clients including BHP Billiton, Anglo American, Xstrata, SABMiller & the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management as well as to dozens of small business enterprises, NPO’s, NGO’s and CBO’s.

Areas of expertise include Communication Management, Public Relations, Disaster Management and Crisis Communications, Reputation Management, Corporate Social Investment, Triple Bottom Line Reporting, Organisational Culture Establishment, Knowledge Management, Report Writing and Training Communications, Small Business Development and Government/Industry Liaison. I have a blend of 27 years of practical and academic experience in organisational communication and organisational culture.

I am a Senior Lecturer. Due to my interest in supporting students who are new to tertiary study I am mainly involved in teaching Level 5 psychology courses. I also teach Behaviour Modification (Level 6).

Past experience:

Two of my passions are teaching and behavioural psychology. I have great empathy for the challenges faced by our distance students and second time learners. This is because I took an eight year 'holiday' between completing my bachelor degree and beginning post graduate study. I also understand the challenges of working full-time, having a family and studying both by contact and by distance. The degress I hold are: BA Advanced Double Major English and Psychology, BSc Honours, and a PhD in Psychology. In addition to teaching at the Open Polytechnic I maintain research links and work with colleagues at Victoria University of Wellington. My research interests are: self-control and impulsivity, gambling, consumer behaviour, autism, and the use of behaviour modification techniques with horses.

Past experience:

I first encountered Psychology as a student, studying towards a BA (also majoring in Linguistics) at Victoria University. My MA research led me into the area of Cyberpsychology where I studied chatrooms. I was fortunate to meet some very experienced users and gain a window into chatroom culture, identity construction, and gender differences. My PhD work at Massey University investigated what it means to be online for people with physical and sensory disabilities in New Zealand through online interviews. My Cyberpsychology interests continue into Second Life and e-learning.

My teaching experience varies from lecturing and tutoring in Psychology to learning advising using webcasting technologies. I have also contirbuted to the ongoing development of an Online Writing and Learning Laboratory.

Health Psychology and Discursive Psychology are futher interest areas.

I have published chapters in books and articles in journals, including Cyberpsychology & Behavior, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication and Disability & Society.

I am the Principal Lecturer and Internal Moderator in the Centre for Education Studies (Diploma of Teaching - Early Childhood Education). Likewise, for the last two years, I have been a council member on the New Zealand Association for Research in Education (NZARE). My recent research interests are in mentoring (MenToa) relationship between visiting lecturer, students, and associate teachers within the student practica experiences, and building kaupapa Māori within early childhood education. Likewise, I am the co-convenor of the Early Childhood Teacher Education Tamaki Makaurau Network Associate Teachers symposium. I am particularly interested in working alongside early childhood education tertiary providers, government, and community organisations in the quest to maintain quality education for 0-5 year old tamariki within Aotearoa.

Past experience:

I am passionate about supporting children/whānau within Aotearoa to have the opportunity to partake in quality early childhood education. I have been working within the early childhood sector for twenty-three years. For fourteen years, I have been working alongside children, parents and teachers. During this time, I have gained a lot of useful 'hands-on' experiences to support me within my job. In addition, for the last nine years, I have been working within the tertiary sector. My areas of expertise are evident within my qualifications, which are:

I have been studying social sciences for ten years, and teaching for the last 4 years. Previously, I worked at Victoria University of Wellington, where I taught social sciences courses and delivered guest lectures. While pursuing my doctorate research on women’s participation in politics, I have taken part in a number of national and international conferences and seminars. I have also worked in governmental roles involving business analysis, strategic planning, and workplace training.

The key areas of psychological research I am interested in are the psychology of happiness, theories relating to motivation and self-efficacy, interpersonal and intergroup communication, depression, and learned helplessness. My current research relates some of these theories to the way we think about the future of humanity.

I am also interested in action research, research focusing on the environment and sustainability, and theories of teaching and learning.

As a Regional Lecturer for the Waikato I provide a local point of connection for students in that region. I assess work, support students and am part of the team providing practicum in early childhood settings.

Past experience:

From my background as a parent, early childhood teacher, centre owner/manager, adult educator, early intervention teacher, hospital play specialist, tertiary learning assessor and entrepreneur, I bring a wonderful range of skills and knowledge to this position in which I can contribute to the preparation of others as they become early childhood teachers.

I have a great empathy for and understanding of the experience of being an adult learner which allows me to relate to my students. My background has been mainly focused in the UK working in Education and Social Service environments. This has covered a range of roles from early childhood teaching, to family focused work for the Education Authority, leading a multi-disciplinary Surestart team as a Children's Centre Manager, and providing training for adults. I have a strong interest in leadership and collaborative partnership development in early childhood education which has developed through multi-disciplinary work over the years. I have a MA in Integrated Provision for children and families and I am currently exploring PhD opportunities. Back then my research centred on children and television. More recently my interests have been on fathering, boys and parenting. I am currently putting these experiences and research into a publication. I have been a distance student and enjoy the contacts I have with students as they balance work, life and study.

Current function:

I am a Regional Lecturer for the Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education). I am based in Dunedin and I am responsible for supporting students with their assessment/academic work, practicum placement and also teaching workshops within the programme.

Past experience:

I am good at my job because I am passionate about quality care and education for all young children in Aotearoa New Zealand. I also believe in on-going support and communication between myself and students, and have effective relationships with students in my region.

My research interests include effective and consistent bi-cultural programmes within early childhood education, in particular the retention of Te Reo Māori. I also have a passion for Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how Treaty frameworks are applied to early childhood practice.

Current function:

I am the Regional Lecturer for Nelson/Marlborough. I support students who are studying towards the Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education).

Past experience:

I enjoy building up good relationships with my students and working towards developing a strong connection with my local early childhood community. I love my work, and have a passion for learning and for adult education.

I began my career in Playcentre when my own children were young, and have since worked in Kindergarten as well as in the care and education setting. With a diverse background in Early Childhood Education, I have a particular interest in teaching as a profession and in philosophies and how these impact on teacher practice.

Other interests include parent partnership, biculturalism & cultural diversity. I am currently doing postgraduate papers in research ethics and methodologies with a view to pursuing my own research interests.

Current function:

I am Regional Lecturer with responsibility for the early childhood certificate programmes. I work closely with the certificate administrator and adjunct tutors in the delivery and teaching of certificate programmes.

Past experience:

I have been involved in early childhood education for most of my adult life. I was involved in play centre and home base care when my children were young and have held teaching and leadership positions within the kindergarten sector. Prior to taking up the postion as Regional lecturer with Open Polytechnic I taught in the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) programme at Victoria University of Wellington and was also Programme Director with the responsibility for 2nd year students. I have a Masters degree and am currently engaged in research on diversity in the early childhood sector.

I am the Academic Convenor for the centre, primarily responsible for the oversight and quality assurance of the Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) programme. I am based in the Auckland Learning Centre.

Past experience:

I have considerable and varied experience in early childhood education as a teacher, adviser, consultant and teacher educator. I am a committed advocate of teacher led community based early childhood education in partnership with parent/whanau. My research interests are in educational and pedagogical leadership in early childhood, the political and historical context of early childhood and sustainability in early childhodd education.
