| Academic Record/Transcript | is the official record of your study at The Open Polytechnic listing all courses and grades |
| Academic Registrar | the person appointed as Academic Registrar by the Chief Executive to be responsible for the monitoring and implementation of academic policies and procedures of The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand. |
| Accelerated Assessment | refers to those assessment practices which seek to recognise your current competence after you have enrolled in a course. |
| Aegrotat Consideration | is a process by which you may be considered for an aegrotat pass because either you were absent from your examination or your performance in the examination was seriously impaired by illness, injury or trauma. |
| Appeals Committee | the Appeals Committee established by the Council of The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand. The Appeals Committee considers formal appeals lodged against a decision of the Academic Registrar. |
| Approved Course or Programme | a course or programme of tertiary education and training approved by the Council of The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand. |
| Assessment | is the process of determining whether a student has achieved the learning outcomes of a course of study. |
| Award | a Certificate, Diploma, Degree or qualification awarded by The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand, NZQA or other certifying body. |
| Board of Examiners | the Board of Examiners established by the Academic Board of The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand, to approve course results prior to releasing to students. |
| Chief Executive | the Principal Officer of The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand appointed by the Council. |
| Council | the Council of The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand. |
| Course | an approved unit/course of study or training which carries a discrete credit value and for which students are formally enrolled. |
| Course Credits | are the credit value assigned to a course that reflect the relative time and effort to complete its learning outcomes. In general, each credit represents approximately 10 hours of student effort. |
| Course Leader | a staff member with delegated responsibility for an individual course or group of courses. |
| Course Work | assessed work produced by students normally submitted during the tuition period and counting towards the final grade, eg essays, assignments, reports, tasks, projects and block course work. |
| Credential | Unit Standard, Certificate, Diploma or Degree. |
| Credit Transfer | a credit gained in the same programme elsewhere. |
| Cross Credit | a credit given for a recognised course that meets the same or similar learning outcomes as the course to which credit is sought. |
| Deferral | an opportunity for a student to defer an examination to the next available trimester under specified conditions. |
| Evaluation | the process of making judgements about programmes and courses regarding performance against a set of standards and/or identification of aspects which could be improved. |
| Examination | an assessment administered by the Academic Registrar on a specific day under supervised conditions. |
| Examiner | a person with responsibility for the preparation and marking of an examination. |
| Exemption | is where a student, under specified conditions, is not required to undertake a compulsory part of a programme. |
| Fixed-period Enrolment | - specified courses which have fixed and published start and finish dates. Students are enrolled in cohorts
- generally, fixed-period courses have enrolment periods that correspond to the three academic trimesters; February to June, July to November, October to February
- where the enrolment period does not correspond to the academic trimesters, the course length is defined in the programme approval documents and the start and finish dates are published in programme information.

| Flexible Assessment | the umbrella term for all those individualised assessment practices which fall outside those developed for a cohort of students in the normal duration of a course (for example, accelerated assessment, recognition of prior learning). |
| Formative Assessment | assessment which allows for feedback, and is not used for determining the final grade. |
| Graduation | successful completion of a programme leading to an award or qualification. |
| Head of School | the person appointed by the Chief Executive as an academic leader responsible for the delivery of specified programmes and courses to students. |
| Health Professional | deemed suitable for aegrotat purposes must be registered and includes: Medical Practitioners, Midwives, Chiropractors, Dentists, Optometrists and Podiatrist. |
| Learning Outcomes | the competence or skills that a student should be able to demonstrate in order to satisfy a specified unit of study. |
| Local Programme | a course or set of courses leading to an Open Polytechnic of New Zealand award. |
| Level of Study | the level of study is determined by The National Qualifications Framework (NQF). - "Levels 1-3 are of approximately the same standard as senior secondary education and basic trades training."
- "Levels 4-6 approximate to advanced trades, technical and business qualifications."
- "Levels 7 and above equate with advanced qualifications of graduate and postgraduate standard."

| Misconduct (Student) | is any breach of the student conduct rules set out in The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand Student Conduct Statute. The Student Conduct Statute covers a wide variety of student conduct including dishonest or improper practice relating to examinations and assessments. |
| Moderation of Assessment | the process for ensuring the reliability and validity of assessment of the required standard. |
| National Programme | a course or set of courses leading to an NZQA or other nationally recognised award. |
| NZPPC | New Zealand Polytechnic Programmes Committee. |
| NZQA | the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. |
| Open Enrolment | specified courses in which students can enrol at any time of the year and normally complete their study over a 12 month period. |
| Plagiarism | - deliberately copying the work of another student
- copying directly from textbooks, the web and other work without correct citing
- failing to acknowledge sources used in submitted assignments (ie, you must cite all references)
- resubmitting an assignment used in one course as an original piece of work for another course.

| Programme | a related package of learning outcomes or courses. |
| Programme Coordinator | a person responsible for overall administration of a programme. |
| Programme Leader | a staff member with delegated responsibility for delivery of a programme or group of programmes. |
| Qualification | the credential awarded upon successful completion of a programme that has been endorsed by the Academic Board, NZQA and/or other professional bodies. |
| Reassessment | a further opportunity granted under specified conditions, for an enrolled student to demonstrate competence in learning outcomes of a unit standard or course. |
| Recognition of Prior Learning | a process which is undertaken whereby credit is awarded for demonstrated competence achieved through work, life experiences or study outside the framework of formal credentials and prior to enrolment in a course. |
| Reconsideration | an opportunity for work submitted to be remarked. |
| Recount | a careful check to ensure that all questions in an examination have been marked, and the marks have been correctly added and recorded. |
| Resit | a second examination opportunity for a student granted under specified conditions. |
| Student | a person who is accepted into an approved course or programme of The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand. |
| Trimesterised Enrolment | specified courses in which students undertake study over a set period, with a set start and finish date. |
| Trimester Transfer | an opportunity for a student enrolled in a trimesterised course, under specified conditions, to transfer to the next available trimester. |
| Summative Assessment | any assessment which measures achievement and is used to determine the final result. |
| Unit Standard | nationally registered set of elements or outcome statements and their associated performance criteria. |
| Unit Standard Credit | the credit value awarded to each unit standard by NZQA. |
| Verified Copy | a photocopy that has been signed as a true and accurate copy of an original by a Justice of the Peace (JP), Solicitor, a Registrar or Deputy Registrar of the Court, General Practitioner (GP), Minister of Religion or School Principal. Please note: verified copies of documents for cross credit purposes must be signed by a Justice of the Peace. |
| Working Day | a day in New Zealand that is not a Saturday, Sunday, national public holiday or regional public holiday (in a place where notice is to be given or a service provided). |
