Gain a Bachelor of Teaching (ECE)

Open Polytechnic’s Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to excel as an early childhood teacher. This degree is approved by the New Zealand Teachers Council for professional registration and will prepare you for a variety of early childhood settings. It's the ideal qualification for those wanting to build a career in early childhood education!

Learn while you earn

The Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) offers a blended approach involving online learning with forums, and face to face workshops. You can continue to work while you study - and you can fit your study around family and any other commitments. While studying, you'll be supported by qualified and experienced lecturers who are available for advice and support.

Upgrade offer

Get the degree by completing just three courses. If you hold a three year Diploma of Teaching (ECE) and are a registered teacher with a current practising certificate, you may be eligible for our upgrade option. To upgrade to a Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) you need to complete just 3 courses within an 18 month period, and attend 3 workshops.

Places in the Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) are limited and applications for Trimester 2 2013 close on 17 May 2013 (note application date has been extended from 26 April)

How it works

We have two different entry categories to cater for different students. Each category has unique requirements and starting points. If you do not meet either categories requirements, but would like to discuss your study options please contact us.

Group A

If you graduated with a Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) from Open Polytechnic since 2005 then this option is for you. 

You must have full or provisional teacher registration to enrol in the Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood) upgrade option.  

Upgrade details

To upgrade to a Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) you need to complete two courses within a 12 month period and attend two workshops. Once your enrolment application is approved we’ll confirm the workshop details. You will need to meet the cost of any accommodation, food or travel required. 

Course details:

75000 Orientation Workshop - 1 day workshop

75303 Self in Society 3 (20 credits)

75304 Research & Inquiry 3 - includes a two day workshop - (20 credits) 

 

Group B 

If you are currently working as an Early Childhood Teacher and have a three year Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) from another tertiary provider or completed the Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) through Open Polytechnic prior to 2005 then this option is for you. 

You must have full or provisional teacher registration to enrol in the Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) upgrade option.  

Upgrade details

To upgrade to a Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) you need to complete three courses within an 18 month period and attend three workshops. Once your enrolment application is approved we’ll confirm the workshop details. You will need to meet the cost of any accommodation, food or travel required.

75303 Self in Society 3 (20 credits)

75304 Research & Inquiry 3  - includes a two day workshop (20 credits)

75301 Learning, Development, Culture and Tangata Whenua  - includes a two day noho marae (20 credits)

 

Applying for Enrolment

To apply to upgrade to the Degree, first make sure that you have checked the groups to see which applies to you. 

Things to remember 

  • One or more courses can be completed in a trimester, depending on how much study you wish to undertake (remember that the number of courses studied in a trimester will affect your eligibility for student loans) and the maximum time frame for your study.
  • Group B applicants are required to send through an original academic transcript as evidence of successful completion of their Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) with their application. Please note that this will be retained on file and not returned.
  • Please include a copy of your full or provisional teacher registration with your application for enrolment.
  • Group A applicants who are completing their Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) qualification and applying for upgrade in the following trimester will need to complete an Authorisation to Disclose information form, if you have not gained Teacher Registration with the New Zealand Teachers Council.

Trimester 2 2013 cut off date for upgrade applications is 17 May 2013. Note the application date has been extended from 26 April.
