About Us

An overview of Open Polytechnic

Open and distance learning is the fastest growing area of education in the world. As New Zealand's specialist institution and largest polytechnic, we play an important role in extending learning opportunities. Our job is to improve access and choice, something we do for nearly 30,000 students in New Zealand and over 40 other countries.

The Open Polytechnic's international standing was recognised in 2004 when it received the Commonwealth's top award for institutional excellence in distance education from the Commonwealth of Learning.

Our students are lifelong learners studying in the home or workplace - people who want to learn but who seek or need an alternative to conventional study. Our easily accessible courses and services are carefully designed to meet their needs.

Workforce upskilling is one of the most powerful contributions open and distance learning is making around the world. Vocational education is our key role. Three-quarters of our students are in the workforce and studying part-time to improve job skills or career development.

At the same time, lifelong learning embraces many needs and aspirations. People use our style of learning to pursue many different life goals.

We use our expertise to support learning in a wide range of other contexts. Commercial clients and Industry Training Organisations use our flexible services to meet their training and development needs, and we work in a variety of partnerships and alliances in New Zealand and internationally.
